Don’t just “Hang In There”!

Does it feel like you are losing your grip? Don’t just “Hang In There”!   I am finding that the best defense is a great offense. Strike early and often before the enemy of discouragement can creep in. But strike with what?Many people use affirmations to get their days started and I definitely believe what you allow into your mind is crucial.  However, I will admit right up front that until recently I had no interest in affirmation hoopla. It turned me off frankly and that was a real paradox because as a follower of Jesus, I should have no problem with what Paul wrote to the folks in Philippians 4:5-8 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

So, I decided to submit. Just do it – so the saying goes. I soulfully wrote down some affirmations about what I believed, what was true or what I wanted to be true and tried to get into the groove.  Splat!  I could not get into it, they were coming up short.  And then a couple of weeks ago it hit me like a ton of bricks!  When Jesus was alone in the desert with Satan, what did he use to strike back? He quoted scripture.  He confidently, matter-of-factly, quoted scripture.   Satan retreated and the angels swooped in to tend to the battle weary warrior.  It was a battle of epic proportions for the mind and spirit and Jesus won.  I got some real clarity when I realized that if God himself, having taken the form of man, felt scripture was the most powerful weapon in the warfare of the mind… I would be wise to do the same.  But,  there was way too much swirling around in my head. Life needed to get real simple.  And, fast.

Here is my first step:  “Jesus says that if I will follow Him, my entrance into Heaven is assured and I will have God’s Holy Spirit living in me while I’m alive.  That sounds like some serious diplomatic immunity from the daily grind! So, I shall act like it.”
