You will find that this topic ripples further than just paint… In Atlanta’s market the trend seems to be leaning towards the Craftsman or Manor style detailing found in newer construction. In fact, these details can propel a 1950’s brick ranch way into the future (or at least the present). Bottom line: Stick with earth tones and grays.
Companies like Restoration Hardware have fueled the trend towards oiled bronze or black door hardware – both inside and out. In fact, Restoration Hardware is headed back to Buckhead to take over the space which formerly housed the ESPNZone. This trend extends to light fixtures, hinges, deadbolts, strike plates, closets – basically everywhere. When Buyers look at homes, ANY inconsistencies in hardware really stick out a “cheap” or “lazy”. I know that is harsh, but the old adage about the “last 5%” applies to renovations as well because it will matter on resale. Splurging on the high impact items like carriage doors, real gas lanterns, and warm outdoor evening lighting always pays off.
Oh, that includes making sure the shingles and gutters coordinate too!
